We made it to 100 days in school! We celebrated by making necklaces using 100 cheerios. We used many skills to complete them: patterning, fine motor, counting by 10’s.

Noodle soup

After our trip to the fish market we carried on our investigation into the animals we find in our oceans. With bags full of seafood we explored the animals further, how does the crabs legs move? What is inside a fish? How many legs does a shrimp have? of course no investigation would be complete without using our sense of taste!

It was stinky, slimy and noisy but the children had a wonderful time. Their initial disgust and nose holding quickly turned to wonder and delight as they prodded, pocked and examined everything and anything they could find.

Atlantis

We had a great time at the Lost Chambers in Atlantis, the children were looking at and inquiring into all the different animals we can find in our oceans. The experience provided us with many wonderings and questions - I think our guide was astounded by the amount and depth of the questions we asked.

Addition and Subtraction

To understand math more comprehensively children have to start with the basic math concepts in the classroom. Each step for math sets children up for the next lesson, they cannot learn subtraction without addition, they can’t learn division without multiplication, etc. Although recognizing numbers comes first, children who can’t recognize numbers as of yet can still learn basic addition with small strategies learned at home. For those who know numbers and can count, addition and subtraction can still be a concept taught with the basic understanding of the skill at home as well. Here are a few tips to get you started teaching your children addition and subtraction basics.

Key vocabulary: Take away, subtract, subtraction, minus, from, equals, leaves, less, add, altogether, more.

Activities:  Everyday teaching moments present themselves consistently. At the park, count the ducks swimming; count the children swinging, how many ducks and children are at the park. We have two cups on the table and we need two more cups, how many cups will we have on the table all together. Take every teaching moment that will help your child add in everyday situations, they’ll never even know they’re learning and you’ll have the secret weapon of parenting. Yet, be sure to use easy concepts and small numbers to start your child with adding or subtracting numbers.

Use other fun stuff to help your children count, add and subtract. Take M&M’s for example, if you have four green M&M’s and three red M&M’s how many M&M’s do you have all together? Or if you have 7 M&M’s and give three away how many do you have left over? In addition, you can make beaded necklaces together and provide the same type of activities as you did with the M&M’s. There is nothing more fun to children than having fun with their parents while learning a new concept.DSC03893 (800x600)

Main points to remember:

  • Use fun stuff to count, add and subtract with.

  • Start out with easy addition and subtraction problems.

  • Use everyday activities to teach.

The  students have been practicing for weeks with Mrs Sikora for their music concert. On Wednesday they were very brave and preformed their songs to a jam packed auditorium of proud family, friends and teachers.
